DCEC has been in operation as long as I have practiced pediatrics in Anderson. When the decision was made for DCEC to move from state funding to private funding due to budget cuts, I was asked to be on the Board of Directors. I knew that this would be an important job as the Board would need to find sources of funding in order to keep DCEC in operation. DCEC is the only preschool in Anderson County that can serve special needs infants and toddlers. The children can also receive all their therapy at the school. Without DCEC in our community, these children may not receive all the services that they need. Serving on the Board has been a challenge at times and a lot of hard work. However, when you walk into the center and you see the faces of the children, it is all worth it. We are blessed with a wonderful staff, a great director, and good therapists. It is my hope that we can sustain DCEC for future generations.
I have served on the DCEC board since we became private in 2010. DCEC is the only facility in Anderson that serves children under five that have special needs. Imagine being a parent of a special needs child and having no where to place them. At DCEC the children can have day care provided, plus all the therapies that they need. I am very thankful that I personally do not need the services of DCEC but I am grateful that I am able to help those families that we serve. Watching these children grow and learn is so rewarding, DCEC has an awesome staff and it is such a pleasure to serve on this board. We have come so far in 4 years but we have the potential to grow even more.
My eyes were open to a whole new world while volunteering at DCEC. I have realized that DCEC enables children and their families to lead as normal a life as possible for them. The love and care these children receive is amazing. The children’s growth is phenomenal. I continue to volunteer on a regular basis and love seeing the children grow socially and mentally. They are so precious and I treasure my time with them.
Being involved with DCEC has been very rewarding for me. I didn’t know much about the program before learning about it with Leadership Anderson, and I now know it is truly a one-of-a-kind educational program for these children. I know that if people could see what I have seen and understand how the kids are getting such special treatment at DCEC, the program would be overflowing with funding and support.
Teachers have been properly educated on how to interact with the special needs of the children at DCEC.
